Description (Maximum of 50 words):
How and when do students use Machine Translation (MT) such as Google Translate? Could access to MT have a positive impact on language learning? This presentation will discuss results from a survey of students regarding the use of MT and will explore ways to discuss this tool in advanced courses.
Content (150 words maximum) (no "I" or "we" in text) Technology is influencing the writing process for language learners in the 21st century. How do teachers effectively acknowledge these advances in technology and the subsequent shifts in student learning patterns and writing strategies? In particular, Machine Translation (MT) programs such as Google Translate are frequent tools in our students' toolbox. But how and when are students actually using Machine Translation? Could access to MT have a positive impact on language learning? How do instructors promote or prohibit the use of translation tools? This presentation will address these questions by discussing results from a survey of Romance language students regarding their use of and perception of MT. Also, this panel will explore ways to discuss this tool and train students to use machine translation in advanced language courses.
Outcomes Attendees will learn how and when students use machine translation. Presenters will show specific examples and present strategies on how to discuss these tools with their students. Attendees will take away specific tips on how to work with advanced students on using these tools to improve their critical thinking.
